Mount Kailash is located in Ngari Prefecture, in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. It lies in the Kailash Range of the Trans-Himalaya, in the western Tibetan Plateau. The peak stands at 6,638 m (21,778 ft), near the border junction of China, India and Nepal.

The region is close to the sacred lakes Manasarovar and Rakshastal. It is the source of four major rivers: the Indus, Sutlej, Brahmaputra and Karnali. Mount Kailash is revered in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Bon traditions, attracting pilgrims from Nepal, India, China and beyond.

The pilgrimage includes a visit to Lake Manasarovar and a sacred circumambulation of Mount Kailash. Climbing the mountain is strictly prohibited by the Chinese government because of its deep religious significance.
