Trip Overview

Group size 2–20
Journey Kathmandu → Kathmandu

Mount Kailash is located in Ngari Prefecture, in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. It lies in the Kailash Range (Gangdisê Mountains) of the Transhimalaya, in the western Tibetan Plateau. Its peak stands at 6,638 m (21,778 ft), north of the western trijunction of the borders of China, India and Nepal.

Mount Kailash is close to Lakes Manasarovar and Rakshastal. The sources of the Indus, Sutlej, Brahmaputra and Karnali rivers lie nearby. Sacred in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and the Bon religion, Mount Kailash attracts pilgrims from India, China, Nepal and other countries. The pilgrimage generally involves travelling towards Lake Manasarovar and completing a circumambulation of Mount Kailash.

Although climbers have surveyed the mountain, there is no recorded successful ascent. The Chinese government prohibits climbing because of its religious significance.
